biography

Selby is a dancer, performance artist, service worker, writer, and dreamer.

She was born and raised in Boise, Idaho where she started dancing at the age of 4. Selby gained much of her early dance training at competition studios in Boise and later, professional dance companies in Idaho: Idaho Dance Theater, LED, and Project Flux Dance. From 2017-2018, she studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance under the direction of Summer Lee Rhatigan in its last year of operation. Selby simultaneously apprenticed for the Margaret Jenkins (no-relation) Dance Company during her studies in San Francisco. She studied at P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Art Research Training Studios) in Brussels, Belgium from 2019-2022, eventually achieving her Professional Bachelors in Dance / Bachelors of Art. These days, Selby still resides in Brussels with her boyfriend Michiel Neyt, working full time in a restaurant and slowly easing back into her professional artistic career post-grad.

A lot of Selby’s current personal work is centered around understanding her family’s ancestral lineage in conjunction with political, social, and cultural movements that affected their livelihood. Her most recent solo work in my shakin’ hands investigated the stories of her two grandparents Teresa Lorraine Servatius (grandmother on Mom’s side) and Fred Cogswell Jenkins (grandfather on Dad’s side) that both committed suicide when her parent’s were very young. This work was premiered at the graduation festival EXiiiT in Brussels, Belgium in July 2022, and re-adapted for Treefort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho in March 2023. For Selby, this is an ongoing discovery into her grandparent’s lives and a lifelong journey into dispelling the generational trauma she feels affected by.

In the background, Selby stays interested in the intersection of maintenance art, social reproductive work, and surrealism. She does a lot of automatic writing exercises, writes poetry (much of which she’s too anxious to publish), and is a penpal to some loved ones back in the States. She is cultivating a personal witchcraft practice that can support her deep emotional sensitivity and intuition, and remains curious about aspects of life that feel elusive to her.

Selby joined leprojetgéo in September 2022 for the residency at Bellevue: TOWARDS UNINTELLIGIBILITY.
